It all started when my son saw a rat, and I began to worry about what I put in my compost bin. Well, I was careful not to put anything cooked in there, but we’re a family with two growing lads and we buy potatoes by the sack. We have a lot of vegetable peelings and other uncooked food waste and I really didn’t want to start putting it all in the rubbish bin. Never mind the planet - we wanted the compost.

Forsaking the plane for the train is becoming an increasingly popular option among carbon-conscious holiday-makers. Travelling return from London to Paris by Eurostar instead of flying, for example, is estimated to generate less than a tenth of the carbon dioxide - 11 kilos as opposed to 122.

In the middle of 2008 I received an electricity bill and was staggered to discover that they wanted to put my direct debit up to nearly £100 per month.  There were only two of us in the house, and we thought we were quite energy efficient.  We had already numerous compact fluorescent bulbs and turned lights and appliances off when not in use.
